Effective communication is the most important element of training and behavior modification. In addition to an emphasis on positive reinforcement, I believe it is also important to be able to communicate to a dog that they have made a wrong choice.
Dogs are hard wired to look for leadership in their pack (family). If a clear leader is not present, then the dog will assume the position of leader. For obvious reasons, it is undesirable for a dog to be leader in a pack which includes humans. Many of the problematic behaviors shown by dogs stem from a lack of clear & convincing leadership displayed by their humans. In order to establish oneself as leader, one must first learn how to properly communicate.
Respect from dog to owner is very important, but also important is respect from owner to dog. When making a request of the dog, the trainer must give the dog the chance to chose, and then respond accordingly. It is as important to “listen” to your dog as it is to be heard by them.
Dogs (and people) learn best when having FUN! Maintaining an enjoyable and supportive experience is important while teaching your dog to respect and listen.
